We’re Grateful to Serve

For over 30 years, Prince of Peace has been blessed to provide Thanksgiving Dinner to the homeless, the poor, and people in crisis on Thanksgiving Day. Parishioners offer already prepared roasted turkeys, stuffing, gravy, and pies, or store-bought versions of the same packaged and canned foods, which feeds approximately 1,600 people at the following locations:

  • Resurrection Catholic Parish in the Denver Harbor Area

  • Magnificat Houses in Downtown Houston

  • Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen, near Minute Maid Park

  • Casa Juan Diego Men’s and Women’s Shelters, off of I-10 and Durham/Shepherd Drive

  • 1960 Hope Center, off 1960 at 744 Cypress Creek Parkway


 Be His Hands and Feet

Parishioners have four ways to be Christ’s hands and feet.

1. Serve on the Leadership Team

  • Sign up parishioners to donate food and funds for the program during Fellowship Sonday(s).

  • Call potential food and financial donors.

  • Recruit volunteers for church and dinner site work.

  • Perform the duties of Site Captain for one of the Thanksgiving dinner locations.

  • Organize data tracking system of food donations for site calculations and send regular reports to Mercy Ministry staff.

  • Shop for needed supplies.

  • Along with POP staff, organize and facilitate the pre-event meeting of site captains, site volunteers, and church volunteers.

2. Prepare and Donate Food(s)

  • Roast Turkey(s).

  • Prepare stuffing, gravy, and pies, or purchase pre-made versions of the same items, and deliver them to the church, ready to eat on Thanksgiving morning.

  • Donate paper products and other kitchen supplies needed to cook, serve, and clean up.

3. Make a Financial Donation

  • Donate funds for the purchase of needed foods.

4. Volunteer at Prince of Peace on Thanksgiving Day (6:30 am – 10:30 am)

  • Welcome and check-in volunteers. 

  • Receive incoming food donations from car line.

  • Move food to Mercy Center for refrigeration, repackaging, etc.

  • Repackage foods for proper cooling during transportation to sites.

  • Pack delivery vehicles.


5. Volunteer at a Serving Site on Thanksgiving Day (8:00 am – 12:00 pm or 11:00 am – 3:00 pm)

  • Pray

  • Deliver food to site.

  • Prepare and cook food.

  • Serve dinners with love and a smile.

  • Clean up
