a lasting difference
Approximately 23% of adults in Houston/Harris County struggle with the English language. The Mercy Ministry develops ESL class materials, recruits and supports volunteer instructors, and manages registration to teach English to approximately 200 people annually.
The ESL program at Prince of Peace Catholic Community is offered on a quarter system during the school year. The Fall Quarter runs from late September through November. The Winter Quarter is from January through February and the Spring Quarter is held from April through May.
There are three levels offered: Basic, Level 1, and Level 2. Additionally, an Advanced English Conversation class is being offered. Enrollment in the Conversation Class is limited. Registration for ESL includes testing, both written and oral assessments. Registration is held the first week of September, December, and March. The ESL class calendar is aligned with the Cy-Fair ISD school calendar. There are two scheduled class times:
- 9:30 - 11:30 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays
- 7:00 - 9:00 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays

Would you like to volunteer? Do you want to provide the gift of the English language to adults who are motivated to learn? YOU can make a lasting difference in the lives of Houston families by volunteering as an ESL instructor. You do not need to know another language to be an ESL instructor. If you have native, or near native, fluency in English and are willing to commit a minimum of 4 hours per week (at least 2 hours/day, 2 days/week), this volunteer position is for you.
