Where are they now?
May is the month of good-byes and new beginnings. Here at POP, we say farewell to our graduating Blessed Beginnings pre-K children and bless our many high school and college seniors. We are also getting ready to say farewell to one of our own, Deacon Nicolas Ramirez, who will be ordained a priest the first Saturday of June. Father Nicolas will be assigned by the Cardinal to ministry in one of the 150 parishes in the archdiocese. He will be preaching a farewell homily May 28-29 here at POP. Please keep him in your prayers.
Instead of writing something inspirational today, I’m going to answer a few questions. The staff and I are frequently asked what happened to one of our clergy who have moved to a new assignment. So here’s the 411 on some of the beloved deacons and priests who have served Prince of Peace during the past few years.
Father Tom Lam, our former parochial vicar, is now the pastor of a large parish and is currently preparing to open a Catholic school. He can be reached at Epiphany of the Lord in Katy.
Father Eurel Manzano last summer became the pastor of St. Theresa’s parish in Sugar Land, an active community with a growing school.
Father Jeff Bame grew up in Prince of Peace and was ordained last June. He immediately became parochial vicar of St. Michael the Archangel parish near the Galleria.
Father Sebastine Okoye our former parochial vicar is now parochial vicar at Saint Anthony of Padua in the Woodlands.
Deacon Al Prescott retired from his occupation as an engineer and moved west with his wife Sandy. He currently serves at St. Mary’s parish in Brenham, TX, in the Austin Diocese, although we see him frequently back here in Houston.
Deacon Fred Dinges left his job as Ministry Leader of Worship here at POP to go to work in his home parish, Sts. Peter and Paul in Belleville, TX. He and his wife Ruth already lived there, so all he gave up was a very long commute!
Deacon John Hagyari was recently transferred to Christ the Good Shepherd parish in Spring, following many years as a member and then deacon here at POP.
Among the many seminarians who have worked at studies at Prince of Peace:
Deacon Khoi Le is preparing to be ordained a priest
Father Victor Pereznow serves as parochial vicar at St. Jerome parish in Spring Branch
Father Martial Oya is the pastor of St. Matthew’s parish in Houston
Father Reggie Samuels is pastor of St. Hyacinth in Deer Park
Father Joseph Phan is pastor of St. Francis de Sales in Houston
Father Tom Ponzini is pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus in Manvel
